Introduction: a village is a annual gathering of the rural people held on some occasions. it is a colourful mini-exhibition men and women of all ages particularly the children find great pleasure in visiting the village fair.
Site and Occasion: it is generally held on the bank of river, canal or near a temple or in an open space. The occasion may be religious or cultural according to the tradition of the local people. it lasts for a day or a week.
Description: in the fair different kind of temporary sheds are made. Though temporary, they are nicely decorated. Sellers keep their goods of various kinds for sale. Jatra party, circus party and puppet show put their tents, which attract the visitors. Puppet dance attracts the children very much. But Nagordola and magic-show attract all kinds of visitors. Now-a day cinema parties also show films.
Things sold/Things found: various kinds of things are sold in the village fair. Toys, wooden goods, clay pots, dolls, bamboo baskets etc are sold.
Children buy toys, kites, flutes; sweetmeats etc. village women buy combs, ribbon, looking glasses, and cosmetics etc. seller sells cheap fancy goods, clothes of various kinds, readymade garments. All these things bring a great delight to the children, boys and girls.
Conclusions: a village fair is a means of recreation, change and social get-together of the village people. It encourages the cottage industries and handicrafts. Government should encourage the fair as they help development of rural arts and crafts. But a village fair should never allow gambling or other evil activities which may do a lot of harms to the younger generation.
